These commercials feature over exaggerated and comical

These commercials feature over exaggerated and comical violence with the underlining message that no one’s day is hard enough to pass up a Mike’s. It failed, ranking as one of the year?s most hated campaigns by both men and woman according to 2002?s Ad Track, a consumer survey. The series of commercials are aimed at 21-29 year old males and the repetition of comical violence (such as a construction worker being impaled on the job and a lumberjack cutting off his own foot) gets less and less funny every time it?s viewed. Eventually the joke just wore out and the commercial became annoying and offensive.

Humor in advertising tends to improve brand recognition, but does not improve product recall, message credibility, or buying intentions. In other words, consumers may be familiar with and have good feelings towards the product, but their purchasing decisions will probably not be affected. One of the major keys to a successful humorous campaign is variety, once a commercial starts to wear out there?s no saving it without some variation on the concept.

Red-hot beat is catching

Red-hot beat is catching

0 Comments | Kent and Sussex Courier, The; Tunbridge Wells ed., Jun 11, 2010 | by Jane Bakowski

ON a cold Tuesday evening in Tunbridge Wells, the red-hot beat of Brazilian samba drums echoes strangely across the common.

“It was the sound which first attracted me,” said Skinners’ School science teacher Rebecca Smith, a member of Bloco Fogo samba band since it first burst onto the local scene 10 years ago.

“I heard a visiting band while I was shopping in Tunbridge Wells and I was just transfixed.”

The wild call of the samba rhythm, born in the heat of Brazil, also found an answering beat in the heart of interior designer Gary Hindley, of Brenchley. Already enthralled by the colour and energy of Spanish fiestas, he recalled: “I was in Maidstone to watch the Christmas lights being switched on when I heard the distant sound of samba. I just had to find out who was playing, and now I belong to Bloco Fogo in Tunbridge Wells and their other group in Maidstone too.”

As they gather for their weekly rehearsal in the Forum music venue on the edge of Tunbridge Wells common, the enthusiasm of the local group is infectious.

Biggest “This drum is the first instrument I’ve ever found that I can play – that’s why I went for the biggest,” said East Malling dentist Chris Pottle, moving to the beat beneath the weight of a 26 inch diameter surdo bass drum.

Individually, members of Bloco Fogo – the name means “small fire group” – are a mixed bunch representing all ages, shapes and sizes, with 80 members across the two groups. But when the drumming starts, under the leadership of musical director Alex Mann, suddenly they become one body. It is a strange, many-limbed creature, feet moving in stamping rhythm, arms drumming, faces lit up with the sheer joy of making music together.

“This is the way they do it in Rio,” he tells them.

In the decade since it formed, on the back of Tunbridge Wells’s Millennium winter street festival, the band’s unmistakeable sound and clashing costumes have become a familiar part of events all over Kent and far beyond, from local street festivals, fetes and private parties to huge samba gatherings in Europe.

“We fuse Brazilian, Cuban and African sounds for drums, bells and cymbals and compose most of our own music, so there is no-one else like us,” said Mr Mann, a professional musician who grew up in Wadhurst.

“It has opened up a whole new world for me,” said Rebecca Smith

We have voice recognition

We have voice recognition system, why not sign language recognition systems too.

We should have Computer Optical Sign Language Reading Sensors, as they are now needed. If we are to truly cross the digital divide then lets cross it all the way and take the whole thing to a much higher level. It makes sense doesn?t it?

And why not, we have many tools for computer users to allow for maximum accessibility and why not go to the next step? Think of what it could mean for the world too. An astronaut in space who speaks a different language could use signing to say something and the computer could translate it and display it instantly in all languages.

All of a sudden with such systems all people of such handicap would become instantly more valuable to the workplace, society and our over all productivity. Additionally, it does not just level the playing field but it gives us a better chance to learn from those who come from a very unique perspective. Perhaps you might consider all of this in 2006.

Sugar hidden in plain sight

DEAR DR. GOTT: I have both your diet and cookbooks but have a question about sugar. I use an artificial coffee creamer that claims to be sugar-free but contains “corn-syrup solids.” Is this really a sugar-free product?

DEAR READER: In a word, no. Corn-syrup solids are simply dried, powdered corn syrup

Women, people with ages over 50,

Women, people with ages over 50, people with gastro-intestinal disorders, people with diabetes and people with high blood cholesterol levels are very likely to develop gall bladder disease. A good gall bladder diet can ameliorate the symptoms of gall bladder disease and can also prevent the occurrence of complications.

Inappropriate diet leads to the formation of gallstones, which block the bile ducts and interfere in the normal activity of the gall bladder. The gall bladder is an organ that assists the liver in the digestion of fat. The gall bladder stores the bile produced by the liver and releases it when it is needed in the process of digestion. Gallstones are formed when cholesterol, calcium and bile salts accumulate inside the gall bladder, causing inflammation, swelling and pain. In some cases, gall bladder disease can even involve bacterial infection. Gall bladder disease can lead to serious complications and sometimes requires surgical intervention. Gallstones can cause cholecystitis (inflammation and swelling of the gall bladder), choledocholithiasis (occurs when gallstones accumulate inside the bile duct) cholangitis (infection of the gall bladder and bile duct) and pancreatitis.

An appropriate gall bladder diet can?t eliminate large gallstones, but it can facilitate the elimination of smaller gallstones.

Vodafone reports return to growth as storm brews ahead of AGM

Vodafone reports return to growth as storm brews ahead of AGM

0 Comments | Herald, The; Glasgow (UK), Jul 24, 2010 | by douglas hamilton

VODAFONE has reported growth in service revenues for the first time in two years, helped by strong demand for mobile phone data.

The world’s largest mobile phone network operator reported a 1.1% rise in service revenues to pound(s)10.58 billion in the past three months, reversing a trend that began in the final quarter of 2008. Revenue from data services such as smartphones and high-speed internet “dongles” jumped by 25%.

“These are the first quarterly results to show service revenue growth since the global recession impacted,” said chief executive Vittorio Colao. “We have achieved these results through our continuing commercial approach in key European markets, focusing especially on data, and from strong growth in emerging markets, with India now cash-positive at an operating level and our highest ever quarterly revenue in Turkey,” he added.

Vodafone saw strong growth in demand for smartphones in Europe during the quarter, particularly in the UK where the company started selling Apple’s iPhone earlier this year.

Since taking over as chief executive in summer 2008, Colao has been trying to increase growth in Vodafone’s existing markets rather than continuing with the acquisition drive that has given it a global presence.

Vodafone said there was still room for further economic improvements in many of its markets but said the changes it had made so far – to focus on the sales of data plans for internet access and emerging markets – had worked well.

Later this year, the Newbury-based company will set out plans to accelerate its strategy to drive further shareholder value.

The group released the trading statement before its annual meeting, which is expected to be stormy. The board is fighting off increasing complaints from investors that the company’s market capitalisation does not match analysts’ valuations.

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, a Canadian fund with a 0.42% stake in Vodafone, wants a board shake-up because of concerns about the mobile operator’s “strategic weaknesses” and “disastrous” acquisition record.

Vodafone has previously faced calls to resolve situations where it owns minority stakes in assets, such as in the US where it owns a 45% in Verizon Wireless, and in France where it owns a 44% stake in SFR

If you want to

If you
want to achieve any worthwhile objective, then reject thoughts
that prevent you from achieving it. If you don’t, these thoughts
will become beliefs – so-called limiting beliefs because they
limit you from attempting and achieving things you’d otherwise do.

Decide to listen to that other voice inside you, the quiet one
that encourages you to ‘go for it’, ‘you can do it’. Agree with
that voice that whispers good things about you. These thoughts
empower you to achieve success when you hold them in your mind
consistently.

Remember that if you think a certain thought long enough, you
start to believe it’s true. And what you believe determines your
behaviour.

Your beliefs determine your reality, and your belief stem from
your thoughts. You have the power to choose your thoughts,
which inner voice you accept.

Choose who you’re going to listen to. Which of your inner voices
will have the upper hand? What are you going to believe about
yourself?

Once you have a sound belief in yourself and your abilities, it
won’t matter what others think or say.

Has the use of aromas and herbs,

Has the use of aromas and herbs, only recently been appreciated for their healing, and recuperative qualities? Most certainly not.

Aromas had been used for medicinal, spiritual, and magical purposes going back as far back as Egyptian times 3000 B.C. Even further back in time 5000 B.C. the Tassili cave paintings showed women wearing fragrant flower garlands. There are frequent mentions of the use of potions throughout history ? Pliny the 1st century Roman historian, mentions in his Natural History narrative, 32 remedies prepared from roses, 21 from lilies, 17 from violets, and 25 from pennyroyal. Ancient Indian cultures used sandalwood for genito-urinary infections.

Nostradamus, at the age of 21 received a licence, having studied in Montpellier France, to practise medicine.
